Black and White Picture of J.R. Simplot

The Entrepreneur Behind the Enterprise

J.R. Simplot saw possibilities in problems and acted on them with an entrepreneurial spirit and inventive ideas—helping turn a one-man farming operation into a global food and agribusiness enterprise. J.R. Simplot began building the company in the farm fields of southern Idaho in the late 1920s. Although quite young, he was armed with constant curiosity, boundless energy and an irrepressible drive to find a better way, which fueled his success. When J.R. Simplot diversified his business to include phosphate in 1944, it became an important part of the Simplot success story and core to how we contribute to feeding the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Simplot’s commitment feeding to the world?

We Contribute to Feeding Our World

The J.R. Simplot Company’s purpose and mission is to Contribute to Feeding Our World by Bringing Earth’s Resources to Life. It’s an aspiration that drives our commitment to global food and agriculture and one that’s resulted in a diverse portfolio that spans various agriculture-related interests from the soil to the sea and to dinner tables around the world.

Where does Simplot mine phosphate ore?

Simplot mines in two locations: The Smoky Canyon Mine in Caribou County, Idaho, and the Vernal Mine in Vernal, Utah. After being mined, the land is reclaimed through close work with state and federal agencies to ensure the land remains vibrant, healthy and fertile.

Where do you manufacture phosphate fertilizer?

Simplot manufactures phosphate fertilizers in two locations: The Don Plant, just outside Pocatello, Idaho; and in Rock Springs, Wyoming. From these plants, fertilizer is shipped directly to customers throughout North America.

What does phosphate do?

Phosphate - A Plant’s Energy Source

Just like vitamins help our human health, nutrients like nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium are key building blocks for plant life. Phosphorus is an essential nutrient that enhances a plant’s ability to use and store energy. It helps in root development, plant growth and maturation and seed development.

What does nitrogen do?

Nitrogen - For Leafy Growth

As one of the key building blocks for plant life, nitrogen is an essential nutrient to promote green leafy growth and bloom development in plants. Plants absorb more nitrogen than any other element.

Why is fertilizer important?

Fertilizer Ramps Food Production

Every part of our lives is touched by fertilizer in some way. Fertilizer is responsible for more than 50% of the world's food production. More than 2 billion people suffer from micronutrient malnutrition and fertilizers help combat this threat to world health. Fertilizers also help replenish the nutrients lost as plants and crops grow, ensuring the soil has the resources it needs to produce more plants effectively. Over the past 40 years in North America, farmers have been able to more than double their production on roughly the same amount of acreage thanks, in large part, to fertilizer. Simply put, fertilizer feeds the plants that feed the planet.

How do we deliver our products?

Dependable Delivery

The sophisticated distribution system at Simplot Wholesale Crop Nutrition ensures that you can count on us to deliver. Our online order status and a vast warehouse system across North America help ensure your shipment arrives at the right time, every time.

How is phosphate fertilizer made?

Phosphate rock (ore) is mined, then crushed and washed to remove most of the sand and clay embedded with the phosphate. This is a process known as beneficiation. Once the sand and clay are removed, the phosphate is mixed with water to form a slurry, then pumped through a pressurized, underground pipeline to a manufacturing facility where it is processed with sulfur and/or ammonia to produce fertilizer.
